U.S.-designed and manufactured onshore in a DMEA accredited (Category 1A) Trusted foundry; enables fault containment at the edge for Defense and Space

Plano, Texas — October 4, 2025 — Apogee Semiconductor today announced the APIO16/AFIO16 radiation hardened 16bit I/O expander family is flight qualified, giving system integrators the flexibility to align reliability goals, budgets, and schedules with their mission requirements. The family expands digital I/O via I²C/SMBus/SPI interfaces and integrates level translation across 1.4 V to 5.5 V rails, enabling robust, scalable control architectures while conserving FPGA and processor resources. The APIO16 targets LEO missions with 30 krad (Si) total dose resilience, while the AFIO16 extends the family to GEO class environments with 300 krad (Si) resilience using the same 28pin TSSOP footprint to simplify upgrades.

To support programs where supply chain trust is critical, AxIO16 is designed in the USA and manufactured onshore in a Trusted DMEA (Category 1A) foundry. This provides an added layer of confidence for Defense and Space customers aligning to DoD trusted supplier expectations.

This flight grade release builds on Apogee’s evaluation grade version of the APIO16 and advances system fault containment: placing resilient, intelligent interface devices at the edge to provide detection and fault containment at domain boundaries, preventing propagation across power and logic domains.  APIO16/AFIO16 complements Apogee’s RelBridge™ portfolio, enabling system level resilience without over hardening every node.

“With flight grade options now available for APIO16/AFIO16, engineering teams can standardize on one I/O expander architecture and choose the screening flow and grade that fits their mission profile and cost objectives,” said Mark Hamlyn, General Manager of Apogee Semiconductor.
